A horsepower war is brewing and it’s all under the roof of the Volkswagen Group.
Volkswagen’s debut of the Golf R400 packing 395 hp might have woken the beast within Audi, as the higher-end brand decided to one-up its brethren with the A3 Clubsport concept packing 525 hp, previewing the next-generation RS3. Volkswagen is now looking at its four-cylinder TDI engine for ways to eke even more performance out of it.

What does that mean? Well for Americans, it’s still unclear. But in Europe, don’t be surprised if the EA888 – VW’s new diesel engine – starts pushing 442 lb-ft of torque in the future thanks to twin-scroll turbos. This car will basically be a super version of the GTD, sort of what the Golf R is to the GTI, and the lineup of twin-turbo diesels will be badged as RD cars.
Audi won’t be turning to the turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine for its new RS3, but rather the turbocharged five-cylinder that currently powers the car will live on. Regardless, Audi will make sure the RS3 trumps the R400 in terms of performance – but either way, there’s going to be a lot of high-powered turbo diesels running around.
